EXCLUSIVE: Night Engine to headline Creative Circle Ball & Awards 2013

nightengine By all accounts, this “British art-pop quartet” have come out of nowhere. Hot off a tour with Kaiser Chiefs, they recently sold-out their first headline gig at London’s iconic Borderline. And if this write-up in the Indy is anything to go by, we’re in for a helluva treat…

Everyone in the London music industry who isn’t at the Brit Awards is at the Borderline, or so it seems: the moment you reach the foot of the stairs you have to fight through a sea of satchels.

The source of the buzz is a west London band called Night Engine (****). Fronted by an elegant sir in a Terylene shirt, with slicked-back strawberry blond hair and named only as Phil, and with a show-stealing Eno-esque synth-nerd called Dom, Night Engine have come from nowhere. With just a wedding band here and a Zappa covers band there in their rear-view mirrors, their emergence was so stealthy and so sudden that they missed all the January polls. The last time I remember a band arriving as fully formed and confident as this was Franz Ferdinand, a decade ago.

They describe their sound only as “the music of the city”, and you can certainly imagine it as the theme music for speeding along on the trans-Europe express, gazing at great cities through the glass. For me, it’s Young Americans Bowie meets Gang of Four meets the Associates meets pre-shark-jump Simple Minds meets end-period LCD Soundsystem. And their ease with song dynamics – ascending verses, swooping middle eights, soaring choruses and fiendish hooks – is uncanny.

“What?” says Phil between songs, temporarily thrown. “Someone just said they love us?” Get used to it, mate.

So get your greasy little finger out of your disaffected earhole, and jam some Night Engine up there instead:

And while you’re at it, go get yourself a ticket right now – if we have any left that is.

Avoid “shock & disbelief” – book your tickets today

We just had an email from Jeremy – our CEO – telling us that, “last year there was shock and disbelief when people were unable to book tickets due to all tables being completely sold out.

Shock and disbelief! And boy did those folks miss out. So if you haven’t already, book now or run the risk of missing the biggest and best ad party of the year.

Tickets are still frozen at 2012 prices till the end of this week, and we’ve only got a few tables left. So…

Young Creatives: Go see The Outdoor Hall of Fame on Feb 28th

Econ_Aged42The Outdoor Hall of Fame, as the name suggests, celebrates great creativity in outdoor. A medium that depends heavily on the quality of the creative to get the public’s attention. Developed in association with Campaign, it’s about identifying great craft skills and talent, and to create an aspirational ‘Mount Olympus’ type place where the legacy of great poster work can be consulted as inspiration.

1995 Wonderbra_Hello Boys (CampaignPA1995)
Back in 2010, the top 100 posters of all time were inducted into the Hall of Fame, featuring The Economist, B&H pyramids, Hello Boys, Wayne Rooney George’s cross and so forth, but also Lord Kitchener “Your Country Needs You”, Guinness girders and toucan etc…

1995 Nike UK_Cantona (CampaignPA1995)See the top 100 here

They’ve now opened up the search again, for the best outdoor of 2011-2012. After thousands of votes from the public, the top 20 are now being judged by Campaign’s judging panel. Depending on their votes some or all of these will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on 28th February.

See the entries here

Winners will be announced on the night by Danny Rogers, the new Editor of Campaign. But from 3 to 6pm at the ICA on Thursday Feb 28, all the candidate work, old and new, will be on display. So if you’re learning the craft, you really should head down there and check out the work.

Students: Apply now for remaining tickets to the 2013 Creative Circle Ball & Awards

Thanks to all the students who submitted work. We’ll be printing the top submissions in the magazine, as selected by Ed. And all entrants will be guaranteed entry on the night. However, we still have quite a few places to fill.

To apply for tickets, simply email honoursnight@creativecircle.co.uk and tell us where you’re studying, or are on placement – we’ll let you know if your application has been successful.

Once again, we’ll be at Camden’s iconic Roundhouse on Wednesday 14th March. And student tickets are £10 each, on the door.

For this tiny fee you’ll be situated in the gallery area of the venue, overlooking the attending agencies, top creatives and the awards stage. There’s a bar up there too.

Plus, every student will receive a goody bag on the night, including a copy of the new Circle Magazine, the latest editions of Luerzer’s Archive and The Drum, and some more stuff.

Edith Bowman will be back as our excellent host. And there’ll be live music from Rough Trade’s hottest new signing, Palma Violets, and DJs through the night.

As well as being able to watch the awards, students will be invited down to mingle afterwards – with the chance to meet some of the best creatives working in the UK industry today.

Share a drink or two with them. Shake yo ass with them. Maybe even hit them up for a book crit or placement. That’s what it’s all about.

3 Rounds of Judging

Round One: Over 300 registered creatives will score each entry out of 10. The five highest scoring entries in each sub category will go through to Round Two.

Round Two: Senior creatives, invited by the President, will again score entries out of 10. The combined average score from Round One and Two will decide which three entries from each category are shortlisted to go into the final Gold Judging round.

Gold Judging Round: The Gold jury will debate and discuss the shortlisted work. Each vote here is conducted using a hand-held device so each voter and result is completely confidential. In each main category there is at least one Gold winner as well as Silvers and Nominations.

And 1 Gold of Golds

This year, legendary director Tony Kaye will choose the best of the Gold winners to be awarded our prestigious Gold of Golds award.
